How to make coffee with Aeropress

Pressure immersion method. Clean, balanced, sediment-free coffee in under 2 minutes. The favorite for travel and beginners.

Time
~2 min
Difficulty
Easy
Yields
1 cup
Coffee
17g
Water
220ml @ 85°C

What you need:

  • Aeropress (standard version or Aeropress Go for travel)
  • Aeropress paper filters
  • Scale with timer
  • Coffee grinder
  • 17g of fresh coffee (recommended: Caturra Honey, Red Bourbon or Pacamara)
  • 220ml of filtered water at 85°C

Steps to brew Aeropress (inverted method)

1

Heat water to 85°C

Lower than V60 because immersion extracts much faster. If you use very hot water, it will taste bitter.

2

Inverted position

Place the Aeropress upside down: plunger down (extended to 4) and the chamber up. This prevents the coffee from dripping prematurely.

3

Dose and pre-wet

Add 17g of medium-fine ground coffee. Pour 50ml of water, making sure all the coffee gets wet. Wait 30 seconds (bloom).

4

Add remaining water and stir

Add the remaining 170ml to reach 220ml total. Stir 3 times gently to ensure even extraction.

5

Filter and steep

Rinse a filter with hot water, place it in the cap, and screw it onto the Aeropress. Let steep until 1:30 total.

6

Invert and press

Place the cup on top, quickly invert (be careful, it's hot) and press slowly for 30 seconds. Stop when you hear the hiss.

Popular variations

  • Traditional method: place the Aeropress directly on the cup with the filter at the bottom, pour everything, and press after 1 min.
  • Aeropress espresso: use 18g fine coffee + 50ml water + quick press = base for homemade latte.
  • Aeropress cold brew: use cold water + 8 minutes of steeping = smooth and sweet coffee.
